Labor and Delivery Unit

Labor and Delivery

When it is time to bring your baby into the world, you can trust our birthing team that includes your obstetrician or certified nurse midwife (CNM), labor and delivery registered nurse specialist, nursing assistant, certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) or anesthesiologists, and/or birthing coach.

Our Family Birth Center offers up to date technology, private labor and delivery rooms, and experienced staff to deliver compassionate care where mothers and families enjoy the very best birthing experience.

High-Risk Pregnancies

Your obstetrician may determine your pregnancy falls into a category of “high risk”. We at the Family Birth Center know this can be stressful and our specialized experienced nursing staff is here to follow your plan of care developed between you and your obstetrician.

The following are some high-risk categories:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Pregnancy over the age of 35
  • Chronic illness
  • Infectious diseases
  • Preterm delivery less than 37 weeks
  • Pregnancy with multiple babies

Virtual Tour of Labor and Delivery Room

Family Birth Center located on 2 East of Kaweah Health Medical Center

Having a baby is a very special time in a family’s life and we are honored you have chosen Kaweah Health to have your baby.

  • First: You will enter through the Mineral King side of the hospital. This entrance is reserved for Emergency Department and pregnant patients only.
  • Second: You will then take the East Elevators to Labor & Delivery on the 2nd floor. Here you will be registered and an armband applied.

Triage Unit

If you are here to be seen in our triage area, the registration staff will notify the triage nurses of your arrival and they will come to the registration desk to escort you to the Triage Unit.

Our Triage Unit has seven beds, where you will be asked to change into a gown and placed on a fetal monitor and asked about the reason you came to the hospital. Your OB doctor will be notified. Patients are allowed one (1) visitor in the triage room. This visitor must be well and not displaying any symptoms of illness.

Scheduled Cesarean Section or Induction of Labor

If you are here for a scheduled cesarean section or induction of labor, the registration staff will notify the nursing staff and escort you from the lobby to your room to prepare you for your special day. At this time, you will be allowed one (1) support person to remain with you during labor or your cesarean section. Your support person will be given an armband so security personnel and hospital staff know that they are allowed to be in the hospital. Your support person is allowed to leave and return to the Labor & Delivery Unit if necessary. While you are in labor, our nutrition room is available to patients for items during labor and after delivery.

Our labor rooms have a labor bed, a monitor to trace your contractions and baby’s heart rate, a baby warmer, and a support person sleep chair. Once in the room, your nurse will apply the fetal monitor and start your admission. This is the room where you will labor, deliver, and recover. Once recovery is done, usually about two hours, you will be transferred to the Mother Baby Unit for your remaining time in the hospital.
