Medical - Surgical

Medical Surgical (Med-Surg) is the largest nursing specialty that delivers care to adults with a variety of medical or surgical issues. The units offer a rewarding work environment that provide vast experiences. Our skilled care teams work cohesively and put our patients and each other as a priority each shift. Our diverse team members feel supported in a compassionate and just environment. We support a culture where shared decision making flourishes and our bedside professional’s voice is valued. The Med-Surg leadership team will truly care about your health and wellbeing. Growth and Development opportunities are readily available and education is encouraged. Our Med-Surg units have a nurse to patient ratio of 1 to 4 or 1 to 5 depending on the patient condition.

Broderick Pavilion

Broderick Pavilion is an 11 bed unit focusing on elective surgical procedures, primarily orthopedic, abdominal and gynecological patients. RN’s gain expert knowledge and assessment of post operative care and have the opportunity to become certified in ultrasound guided placement of IVs.

Float Pool

Float pool team members enjoy the opportunity to care for patients in all medical surgical units within the hospital and can also support Mental Health, Rehab and Long Term Care. After developing a strong foundation, RN’s will eventually be trained in ICCU. RN’s receive a variety of certifications to expertly care for patients across several specialties.

Med Surg 2N Cardiac Services

This 34-bed Med-Surg unit cares for a variety of patients, specializing in cardiac diseases such as chest pain, heart failure, myocardial infarctions, cardiac arrhythmias, and pacemaker insertions. RN’s gain expert knowledge and assessment of the cardiac system, are NIH Stroke Scale Certified and will obtain their ACLS certification. RN’s also have the opportunity to become certified in ultrasound guided placement of IVs and post pyloric feeding tubes.

Med Surg 2S Clinical Decision – M/S CDU

This 29-bed Med-Surg unit is fast paced with both observation and inpatients. They work as an extension of the Emergency Department to further investigate issues that brought the patient in to be seen. The types of patients range from chest pain to wound care, from respiratory system issues to neurological conditions. RN’s gain expert knowledge and assessment skills, and become NIH Stroke Scale Certified. RN’s also have the opportunity to become certified in ultrasound guided placement of IVs and post pyloric feeding tubes.

Med Surg 3N

This 37 bed unit specializing in general and traumatic surgical patients including abdominal, colorectal and urological procedures. Patients with other non-critical medical conditions like pneumonia, wound infections, or unmanaged diabetes or blood pressure may also be admitted here. RN’s gain expert knowledge and assessment of post operative care and become wound vac certified. RN’s also have the opportunity to become certified in ultrasound guided placement of IVs and post pyloric feeding tubes.

Med Surg 3S Oncology

This 36-bed Med-Surg unit cares for a variety of patients, specializing in oncology and palliative care. In addition, 3South is the designated End-of-Life unit, supporting the patient and family during this difficult transition. RN’s gain expert knowledge in cancer treatment; during the course of time and training will become oncology certified and chemotherapy competent. RN’s also have the opportunity to become certified in ultrasound guided placement of IVs and post pyloric feeding tubes.

Med Surg 4N Renal

This 31 bed unit that specializes in renal failure patients. Staff may care for patients in early kidney failure to assist with initiating dialysis or those that are already on dialysis but may need to be admitted for other reasons. This unit will care for patients with multiple co-morbidities and who require complex care management. Our RN’s are certified in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis and receive training on how to care for patients with central lines and fistulas.

Acute Dialysis

Acute Dialysis is a small group of specialized nurses who provide acute hemodialysis treatments to patients in a medical surgical or critical care setting. RN’s are trained to use Fresenius 2008 T machines with Bluestar technology. Acute Dialysis RN’s perform Sustained Low Efficiency Dialysis (SLED) in ICU and CVICU and become experts at accessing fistulas and central lines. Acute Dialysis has 6 dialysis rooms located on 4 North and the average nurse to patient ratio is 1:2 to 1:1.

Kaweah Health Dialysis Clinic

The chronic dialysis clinic provides dialysis treatments for those patients who have end stage renal disease. We also provide dialysis for rehab patients who have their own dialysis facility they go to and need “transient” dialysis which is short stay treatments. We also admit acute patients from the hospital in need of dialysis after discharge. Our clinic has 26 chairs and offers beds for patients whom cannot sit in a treatment chair.

Med Surg 4S Ortho Neuro

This 36 bed unit specializing in traumatic and elective orthopedic injuries including surgical and non-surgical treatment, post stroke/TIA management, neurological disorders (seizures, acute confusion, hydrocephalus, etc.), neck and spinal surgeries. Patients with other non-critical medical conditions like pneumonia, wound injections, or unmanaged diabetes or blood pressure may also be admitted here. RN’s gain expert knowledge and assessment of neurological care, are NIH Stroke Scale Certified and will obtain wound vac certification. RN’s also have the opportunity to become certified in ultrasound guided placement of IVs and post pyloric feeding tubes.

Med Surg 4T Telemetry

This 24 bed Cardiac Telemetry unit cares for patients before and after cardiac surgical procedures and interventions. RN’s specialize in cardiac diseases such as chest pain, heart failure, myocardial infarctions, cardiac arrhythmias, and several cardiac procedures. RN’s gain expert knowledge and assessment of the cardiac system, and will obtain their ACLS certification.

Med Surg Emergency-1East

1East is a Med-Surg unit within the Emergency Department caring for a wide variety of general medical surgical patients. RN’s gain expert knowledge in every facet of Med Surg care. Nurses will work closely with all disciplines and the Emergency Room staff to provide safe, high-quality, customer-oriented services that meet the needs of the community.
