Thinking About Applying?

Welcome to Kaweah Health! As you begin your final year of medical school, we hope that you will take this opportunity to consider Kaweah Health's fourth year elective programs. We invite students who are in good academic standing at accredited medical schools to participate in this exciting program.

Please see the following information and requirements of our Visiting Learner Program:

Applying: Kaweah Health utilizes both VSLO (Visiting Student Learning Opportunities) to receive visiting student applications. All students (except those currently in their 3rd year and any International medical students) attending an LCME accredited U.S. Allopathic or Osteopathic medical school, will submit applications through VSLO.

Affiliation Agreements: Kaweah Health has adopted the AAMC standard affiliation agreement. An approved affiliation agreement must be on file with Kaweah Health and the student's medical school. Agreements are good for 5 years. Details will be provided by the Medical Student Program Coordinator upon acceptance.

VSLO Visiting Medical Schools: To search Kaweah Health’s electives on VSLO, first select USC Keck School of Medicine and then select "Kaweah Health" as the campus. If interested, please submit an application online through the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Visiting Student Application Service (VSLO).

The following requirements are applicable to all students:

  • Application Processing Time: All students are given an initial 45 days to complete their entire application process unless a shorter time frame is approved based on the start date of the rotation. The GME office will notify all students via email about the processing time. Due to the high volume of applications, it is important that all students adhere to the timelines and payment of fees. VSLO students must accept the final offers within 1 weeks and submit fees per the deadline.
  • Health Insurance: Students are required to maintain health coverage from their primary medical school. Proof of insurance coverage will be required from any student who is not covered by their home school. VSLO applicants submit coverage online through VSLO.
  • Immunizations: Students will be asked to submit documentation of immunization data, including current TB and Flu Shot Vaccinations. VSLO applicants must have the completed AAMC immunization form uploaded into VSLO.
  • Current Letter of Good Standing: All students are to be in good academic standing with their home school. A formal letter of approval is required. Students must have passed a clear background check upon matriculation into medical school. VSLO applicants must have the completed letter uploaded into VSLO.
  • Malpractice Insurance: Students must provide proof of malpractice coverage with the home school. Minimum coverage is $1,000,000 per incident / $3,000,000 aggregate. Kaweah Health will verify malpractice insurance through VSLO.

Application Processing Fee of $300: All Medical Students and visiting learners must pay the processing fee due at the time of acceptance. VSLO applicants must pay upon acceptance of the offer in the VSLO system. The fee of $300 is due for each four week rotation per student.

Payments: The payments will be accepted by the Medical Student and Visiting Learner Program Coordinator.

  • All major credit cards are accepted.
  • Checks or money orders are also accepted.
  • If processing fee is not paid as of 30 days before rotation start date, the student will be dropped from the rotation slot.

Cancellation: Students must notify the Office of Graduate Medical Education by phone (559) 624-6999 or email of cancelled rotation(s).

Application Fee Refund: Application processing fees are non-refundable if the student cancels. In the event the elective is cancelled after the student is approved and has paid, a partial/refund of the enrollment fee may be granted at the discretion of the Office of Graduate Medical Education. All refund requests must be made in writing.

Welcome Orientation: All first time visiting students must complete an orientation on day one with the Office of Graduate Medical Education. Returning students will not need to repeat orientation. All students will be notified via email regarding orientation requirements. This email will also include important information pertaining to the first day of the rotation.
