Update on CMS Plan of Correction

I am pleased to report that yesterday a team of surveyors from the California Department of Public Health found that Kaweah Health was in “substantial compliance” relative to the effective implementation of actions necessary to correct the deficiencies that were cited recently by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The deficiencies were noted after we self-reported two unrelated incidents of drug diversion (when prescription drugs are obtained or used illegally) that were reported back in December 2020 and January 2021. I first told you about this matter on July 9 (click HERE to read the full message).

While “substantial compliance” is considered full achievement and the words we wanted to hear, there were observations made by the surveyors that need our attention. During the coming weeks we will address these opportunities, but we do not expect a return visit by the surveyors.

These surveys and the resulting Plan of Correction have been a learning opportunity for us and our team has worked tirelessly throughout this entire process. Our organization is committed to providing the highest level of safety and care possible to our patients, our employees, our providers and our community. We are in constant pursuit of knowledge, skill, and adherence to best practices. We have developed a greater awareness of how our healthcare professionals are at greater risk of developing addictive behaviors and we encourage anyone reading this who is struggling with addictive behaviors, to get help by calling the County’s 24-hour Alcohol & Other Drug Substance Use Disorder Access Line at 1-866-732-4114.
