Why Us?

Welcome to Kaweah Health Emergency Medicine!
We are a three-year, ACGME-accredited emergency medicine residency, launched in 2013 with six residents and now with 13 residents per class. Our residency community is comprised of faculty and resident physicians who were drawn to our high-volume, high-acuity department and our core values which include service, leadership, and care for the underserved.
Our busy, community teaching hospital sees almost 100,000 patients come through the Emergency Department every year and is home to five other residency programs (Family Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry, and Transitional Year) and three fellowships (Emergency Ultrasound, Medical Education & Simulation, and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry). We are a district hospital, the only hospital in our city, and the only trauma center in our county, serving a catchment area of nearly 500,000 people.
We benefit from a committed faculty that is involved in leadership on the hospital, county, and state levels, 24/7 ED pharmacists, a scribe program, and most of all from our talented and engaged residents who make us better every day.
I frequently am asked, “what makes a great emergency medicine resident at Kaweah?” and I tell candidates about these attributes:
- A personal alignment with our mission to care for our medically-underserved community
- A readiness to engage in your training and education
- Adaptability – as the nature of our specialty is the constant confrontation of the unknown and unexpected
- And, a willingness to bring your authentic self to join our community of caring, funny, and talented EM physicians and contribute to our diverse residency culture
Thank you for stopping by!
