What is Dialysis?
Dialysis is a machine that performs the same functions as your kidneys after they have failed. The kidneys have the important job of removing waste from your body and maintaining appropriate chemical balances. Kidney failure is usually permanent, and a person cannot survive without their essential function. The only way to cure kidney failure is with a transplant, but this can often be difficult to obtain. In the interim, dialysis will keep your body regulated until an alternative is found. A patient may be on dialysis for the rest of their life if they are unable or unwilling to receive a transplant.
