Lab tests provide important information that help your healthcare team assess your overall health or help diagnose a specific illness. Examples of lab tests include:

  • Urinalysis to check for a urinary tract infection, kidney problems, or diabetes.
  • Strep A test that uses a sample of cells from the tonsils and back of throat to check for the bacteria that causes strep throat.
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) to measure different substances in your blood, including blood glucose, protein, and fluid and electrolyte balance.

Lab tests can be part of a routine checkup. They can also help monitor a particular condition and help determine the best treatment options.

Make sure you follow instructions to prepare for your lab test. You may be asked to fast, avoid certain foods or drinks, or refrain from strenuous exercise. After the results are available, your doctor will go over them with you to explain what they mean for your health.
