Smart habits for safer practices and games
November 13, 2025
Sports are a great way for kids to stay active, build confidence, and make friends. But like any activity, there’s a risk for injury. From sprains and strains to eye injuries, prevention starts with the right habits and protective gear.
Warm up and tone
Your young athlete may want to jump right into practice or play, but warming up is key to protecting their muscles and joints. Encourage proper warm up with moving stretches or do light aerobic exercise (think jumping jacks) to get blood flowing to their muscles. Cool down stretches are also important.
Kids should also practice consistently and follow a conditioning program to strengthen their muscles. Strong muscles are less likely to be injured.
Use the right gear
Protective equipment makes a big difference. Depending on the sport, this may include:
- Helmets, mouth guards, and pads
- Proper footwear designed for the activity
- Eye protection, such as shatterproof eye guards, especially in sports like baseball, basketball, racquet sports, and hockey
Make sure all safety gear fits properly and the equipment is in good working condition before each use.
Complete a sports physical
Before your child signs up for a new season, schedule a sports physical with their healthcare provider or visit a Kaweah Health Urgent Care. These exams can uncover strengths and weaknesses and guide which sports may be best. During the visit, the provider will review your child’s medical history and check their:
- Height and weight
- Heart and heart rate
- Lungs
- Vision and hearing
- Joints, bones, and muscles
This exam helps confirm your child is ready to participate safely—and gives parents peace of mind.
Build rest into the routine
Young athletes need time to recover. Overuse injuries are common when kids practice the same sport year-round without breaks. Encourage variety—different sports in different seasons—to let growing muscles and joints rest.
Keep an eye on safety
Talk with your child about speaking up if something doesn’t feel right. Pain, swelling, or changes in vision should never be ignored. Quick attention from a provider can prevent a small issue from becoming a bigger problem.
