When it comes to breast health, a mammogram is far more than a routine check: It’s one of our most powerful tools to catch cancer early—sometimes before we ever feel a symptom.

What a mammogram does

A mammogram is an x-ray image of the breast. The test helps find things like tumors, cysts, or tiny mineral deposits called calcifications—even those that are too small to feel. If something suspicious shows up, healthcare providers can follow up with a biopsy (tissue sampling) to determine whether it’s cancerous or benign.

Why screening matters

Early detection drastically improves outcomes. The earlier breast cancer is caught, the more treatment options are available and the better the chances of survival.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women at average risk for breast cancer start talking with their healthcare provider about when to begin screening at age 40. Women 45–54 should get a mammogram every year, and those 55 and older can switch to every other year or continue yearly—talk with your provider about what’s best for you.

Kaweah Health Imaging and Breast Center offers Selenia Dimensions system's Genius™ 3D Mammography™. This exam detects 41% more invasive cancers earlier than traditional mammograms.

How to prepare

The day of your mammogram, skip deodorants, powders, lotions, or perfumes on your chest and underarms—they can interfere with image quality. Wear easy-to-remove clothing, too. If you still get your period, schedule your mammogram for a week or two after you have it, when breasts are less tender.

The mammogram itself is quick. Each breast is gently compressed to get clear images. This can be a little uncomfortable, but the test only takes a few minutes—and those few minutes could save your life.

Next steps

After the test, your provider will review the report and share results. If you need additional tests, you’ll be guided through the next steps.

But your very first (and best) step? To get this essential test on your calendar. A mammogram offers reassurance and peace of mind—and if it catches something early, it’s more than worth your time.
