Breast cancer screening has changed. Updated guidelines give women more choices about when to begin and how often to get a mammogram. New technology also helps doctors examine breast tissue more closely.

Know the guidelines

For women at average risk, the American Cancer Society recommends:

  • Ages 40 to 44: You may choose yearly mammograms.
  • Ages 45 to 54: Get a mammogram every year.
  • Age 55 and older: Switch to every other year or continue yearly screening.

These guidelines are a starting point. Ask your doctor what schedule is best for you.

Consider your risk

A personal or strong family history of breast cancer, certain gene changes, and radiation treatments to the chest at a young age can increase risk. Women at higher risk may need earlier or more frequent screening, including a breast MRI along with a mammogram.

Learn about 3D mammography

Traditional 2D mammography takes flat images of the breast. A 3D mammogram takes several images from different angles. This allows the radiologist to examine breast tissue one thin layer at a time. The technology may find more cancers and reduce callbacks for additional images. The Kaweah Health Imaging & Breast Center offers Genius 3D Mammography®.

Know which test you need

A screening mammogram checks for cancer when you have no symptoms. A diagnostic mammogram examines a concern, such as a lump, nipple discharge, another breast change, or an abnormal screening result. It provides more detailed images and may be paired with an ultrasound.
