Kaweah Health is expanding its long-term subacute care facility on Court Street, increasing the ability for families to keep their loved ones in need of constant medical assistance close by.

The expansion is bringing back skilled nursing patient beds and rooms closed in December 2022 in the aftermath of the pandemic. There are currently 32 long-term subacute patients in the facility. Eight beds licensed for subacute care will be added on July 1, 2026, with plans to add another 14 beds within a year. With those additions, Kaweah Health will be able to care for 54 long-term subacute patients. Long-term subacute patients often need permanent medical assistance devices such as a ventilator and/or an artificial feeding device, requiring around-the-clock care.

“Having to turn away 22 skilled nursing patients was one of the hardest decisions we had to make to get back on our feet financially after the pandemic,” said Jag Batth, Kaweah Health Chief Operating Officer. “To be able to expand this specialized care to 22 individuals means so much to us and their families.”

It can be difficult to find a subacute facility that offers long-term care, which is why Kaweah Health prioritized reopening this portion of its Court Street facility with licensed subacute beds. Families frequently find their only option is a care facility more than an hour away.

“This is one more way we are focusing on compassionate care for our patients and their families,” Batth said. “We don’t want families to face the hardship of long commutes to see each other.”

Kaweah Health’s Subacute Care Facility is located at 1633 S. Court St. in Visalia.
