Kaweah Health Launches Mako Robot for Orthopedic Surgeries
Kaweah Health orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jun Kim performed the organization’s first surgery on its new Stryker Mako SmartRobotics™ surgical robot on Wednesday, July 22, pairing the technology with the Jiffy Knee™ surgical method to give patients a faster, less painful recovery from knee replacement surgery.

What is Mako SmartRobotics™?
Mako is a robotic-assisted system that helps your orthopedic surgeon plan and perform hip and knee replacement surgery. Kaweah Health now offers Mako for total knee, partial knee and total hip replacement.
Mako uses a CT scan (a detailed X-ray) to build a 3D model of your joints. Your surgeon uses that model to plan your surgery around your own anatomy before you're ever in the operating room.
How does Mako work?
- Before surgery, you get a CT scan of your hip or knee. This creates a 3D model of your joint.
- Your surgeon studies the 3D model and builds a surgical plan made just for you, including where and how your new implant should be placed.
- In the operating room, your surgeon guides the Mako robotic arm by hand. Mako uses a feature called AccuStop™ to give the surgeon feedback. This helps your surgeon make changes in real time if needed.
Mako does not operate on its own. Your surgeon controls every step. The robotic arm only moves when your surgeon guides it.
Is Mako right for me?
Mako-assisted surgery may be an option if you:
- Have ongoing hip or knee pain or stiffness from arthritis or joint damage
- Have already tried other treatments like medication, bracing, or joint injections without lasting relief
Not every patient or procedure qualifies for robotic-assisted surgery. Your surgeon will review your case with you and help you decide if Mako is a good fit.
