Frederick W. Mayer, M.D.

About Provider

Dr. Frederick W. Mayer was born and raised in Anchorage, AK. He worked as a commercial pilot prior to leaving to attend medical school at the Bowman-Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC where he received his MD degree.

He then completed his General Surgery and Cardiothoracic training at Naval Regional Medical Center, San Diego (Balboa) as well as an additional 1-year Fellowship at Scripps Clinic and Research Institute in La Jolla, CA to concentrate on his interest and passion of valve repairs, aortic homograph, valve replacement and Ross Procedure. He then served as Assistant Director and Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Naval Regional Medical Center, San Diego (Balboa).

During his time in the Navy, he also served a tour as the ship surgeon on the aircraft carrier USS Midway. Upon leaving San Diego, he started the Kaweah Health open-heart program in conjunction with Starr-Wood Cardiac Surgical Group in Portland, OR. The program started as a De Novo program, completed 6,000 open-heart cases and received a coveted recognition as a Top 100 Cardiac Program in the Nation while under Dr. Mayer's leadership.

After several years, Dr. Mayer has returned to practicing at Kaweah Health. He has extensive experience in a wide array of cardiac & thoracic surgery procedures.
