About this event

What is lymphedema?

The lymphatic system helps move and filter lymph fluid through the body and is returned to the bloodstream. It consists of lymph nodes that are connected by lymph vessels. When part of the lymphatic system is damaged by radiation or surgery from cancer treatment, fluid cannot drain effectively and can cause swelling/lymphedema. Lymphedema is a build-up of protein rich fluid that can become a chronic condition unless identified in the early stages.

What will be covered in the class:
  • Who is at risk for developing cancer related lymphedema.
  • Early signs and symptoms of lymphedema.
  • What to do when you notice signs of swelling or symptoms of heaviness in your extremity.
  • Prevention methods to reduce risk of developing lymphedema from radiation or surgery.
